The video was made last April, weeks before the offcial opening of the airport on the British territory Of St. Helena, a volcanic island more than 1 , 000 miles 0ff the coast 0f Africa. The clip shows atestflightby SouthAfrican carrier Comair. Because of heavy wind on the island, the pilot made れ vo hairy attempts at touching down before he landed the plane. The j etliner did not crash that day, but the hopes and dreams of the cutoff islanders sure did. The blustery weather resulted ⅲ the suspension 0f a multimillion- do Ⅱ plan t0 bring commercialflights to St. Helena. The British government is paying for the construction 0f a 毛 28 million ( $ 36 ) million) al 甲 0 れ an attempt t0 bring an end t0 the island's centuries ofisolation. For years, the only way to get there had been to buy a ticket on a slOW and expensive British mail ship, the RMS 阯 H ど〃 4 , which departs 仕 om Cape Town, South Africa, roughly once a month and takes nearly six days. ln 2002 , islanders voted ⅲ a referendum ⅲ favor of building 明 rnternational al 甲 0 whichthe British government hopedwould bring enough tourist dollars t0 wean the island 0 代 0f British financial support. Construction began ln 2011 , and it seemed like an easy sell: Adventurous tourists would grab the chance tO VISit what has long been one Ofthe world's most isolated and mysterlous places—the verdant, mountalnous island where Napoleon Bonapartelived out his exile.
