738 ( り The Päli Dictionary affords an interesting companson of our own interpretation of terms with the fanciful etymological play of words given by th ・土 Commentators, whieh throws a light both 0 取 their dogmatic bias and their limited linguistic knowledge. lt is quite evident that Bdhgh did not know Sanskrit. ー ln matters of g 貪 / I place Dhammapäla higher than Buddhaghosa. 1 ( 々 ) ln sho . the Päli Dictionary gives clues t0 a variety 0f problems, which it was hitherto almost impossible to approach : the proper study 0f Päli Buddhism is aided greatly by it, and an endless field 0f work lies 0 n to future scholars. 0 the other hand, nobody realizes more than I do, after ten years 0f intimate study, how far the " CIassics ' ' we are, both in analysis and synthesis, ln explanation, interpretation, and application. And also : that it will worth the trouble to explore 0 肥 thoroughly that range of civihzation which lies enshrined in the Päli Canon. 2 6. CONCLUSION. That my share ⅲ the actual working out of the Dictionary preponderates over his own, I am sure Rhys Davids would not mind : on the contrary, it was his wish from the beginning that it should so, and he would repudiate any attempt which would put the faults t0 my blame and the merits to his credit. His mind was more on other aims than dictionary work/ which was not his strongest point. But without him there would not have been this Päli Dictionary. I cannot conclude without extending my sincere thanks tO all those whO have made it possible for me t0 complete the work, and have helped me directly or indirectly with encouragements 0f various kinds. Among the former are the subscribers t0 the Dictionary Fund (especially genefous Japanese donors) : those who have unselfishly handed over to me material collected by themselves. or have assisted me with the copying of indexes, or suggested corrections and given valuable reviews. Above all the Founder of the PäIi Text society and Mrs. Rhys Davids, who helped me with many suggestions details and with reading the proofs : and last not least my wife, who has been untiring in copying the whole MS. f0 「 the printer. For all deficiencies I sincerely apologize. Had I had another twenty years' experience 0f Päli, I would have made a better job of it : but 0 町 motto was " Better now and imperfect than perfect and perhaps never ! ' ' By no means do I leave the work with a feeling 0f self-satisfaction. I realize now that I am only at the beginning of the " perfect " Dictionary. May l, within the next twenty years, see a second edition of the PäIi Dictionary which will come nearer t0 the ideal. But then the ideal will have moved farther away accordingly ! Until then I ho that the " Provisional " Dictionary W111 d0 its service and will prove a help to students and scholars 0f Päli alike ! W. 訂 DE. 227 , VALLEY ROAD, STREATHAM* LONDON, S. The word for " w 0 . entire " vissa is extremely frequent ⅲ Vedic and Sanskrit ( = ⅵ 47a ) , but unknown in Päli (where b takes its place) , except for 0 passage ⅲ the Dh. ( 266 ). Had Bdhgh known Sanskrit, he would have explained it " sabba.
