VII However this may be, it has become 0 「 essential importance tO have a Dictionary 0 「 a language the history 0 「 whose literature is bound up with so many delicate and interesting problems. We have given throughout the Sanskrit roots corresponding tO the Pali roots, and have omitted the latter. lt may be objected that this is a strange method ー 0 use in a Pali dictionary, especially as the vernacular on which Pali is based had never passed through the stage 0f Sanskrit. That may be so ; and it may not be possible, historically, that any Pali word in the canon could have been actually derived 伝 om the corresponding Sanskrit word. Nevertheless the Sanskrit form, though arisen quite independently, may throw light upon the Pali form ; and as Pali 「 00ts have not yet been adequately studied in Europe, the plan adopted will probably, at least f0 「 the present, be more useful. This work is essentially preliminary. There is a large number of words 0 「 which we dO れ Ot know the derivation. PALI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY RHYS I)AYII) S STEDE As the PaIi Text Society began issuing editions and translations Of the Pali Canon and Commentaries in quick Rhys Davids conceived the idea of the compilation 0f an exhaustive dictionary 0f Pali, based on the voluminous basic material that was being brought t0 light. The work t00k more than twenty years of devoted labour, but before his death in 1922 , Rhys Davids had the satisfaction 0f seeing its first volume published. ln four volumes, issued over 1921-25 , the Dictionary contains every Pali word, with its Sanskrit root identified and meanings given in English. Carrying over 1 , 50 , 000 textual references, the work holds the field, even today, as the best PaIi-EngIish Dictionary. THOMAS WILLIAM 蠱 s DAVIDS ( 184 1922 ) was the foremost and most acuve exponent of the study of Pali and Buddhism in England. Rhys Davids studied Sanskrit at Breslau under Stenzler. ln 1882 he was appointed Professor of Pali in the University CoIIege, London. He was the Founder-Chairman 0f the PaIi Text Society ( 1881 ) , through which, by the time he passed away at the age 0f 80 , he had published most Of the basic texts and commentarles in Pali Buddhism, in about 25 , 000 pages ・ Rhys Davids played an active part in founding, in 1902 , the British Academy, and later the School of Oriental Studies, London. He was also the President of the lndia Society from its inception in 1910 ⅱⅡ his death in 1922. 0 「セ d t 催 e : ENGLISH-PALI DICTIONARY A. 2 おん〃イ観阨 Ma んん 0 This is a reprint 0f the E れ g 騰ん - Pa 〃 D 0 れり by A. P. Buddhadatta Mahäthera published long ago by the Pali Text Society in Roman script. This publication was then considered a notable event in the life Of the society, for it was a great improvement on a similar earlier work by venerable W. Piyatissa whose usefulness was reduced for the English-speaking readers by the PaIi words being given in Sinhalese script. This is a considerably enlarged form 0f a concise EngIish-PaIi Dictionary compiled by the present author during the Second World War. The author has coined many new words and has given more than one Pali word for some English verbs which dO not exist in the ancient languages like Pali. This dictionary, though not an exhaustive one, has proved much useful t0 the scholars 0f the Pali language as it presents well chosen material in a single volume Of a manageable Size. CONCISE PALI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY ん P. お靃ん ad 襯 M ん a The Concise P 記ト E g んのれ a リ has been prepared mainly for use by students in schools and colleges. The author is not only an eminent Elder 0f the Buddhist Order but one 0f the leading Pali scholars recognized b0th in the East and the West as an authority on the subject. lt is tO be Obsen ℃ d that the author has kept more or less tO the traditional sense ofwords while not altogether ignoring the meanings given by Western scholars in their translations and lexicons. Many errors in the latter sources have alSO been rectified. But the basic sense adopted is in nearly every instance the traditionally accepted meaning in accord with the commentaries and the glossaries. This perhaps is ofspecial value t0 beginners as thereby they get introduced tO the indigenous tradition, thus providing a useful basis on which tO build ・ up a more scientific knowledge as the study advances. A DICTIONARY OF CHINESE BUDDHIST TERMS W 襯襯刃イ w イ So ん卍 d ん夜 v な〃 0 The authors' aim in this work has been t0 prövide a key for the student with which t0 unlock a closed door and which does serve t0 reveal the riches 0fthe great Buddhist thesaurus in China. ln the absense 0f a dictionary 0f Chinese Buddhist terms, it was small wonder that the translation Of Chinese texts has made little progress, important though these are tO the understanding 0f Mahäyäna Buddhism, especially in its Far Eastern development. TWO main difficulties present themselves: first Of all, the special and peculiar use Of numerous ordinary Chinese terms, and secondly, the large number 0f transliterated phrases. TO explain the Buddhist canon in Chinese being basically translation or analogous tO translation' a large number Of terms exisung are employed approximately tO connote ideas, as the various Chinese translators understood those ideas. A difficulty equally senous is the transliteration 0f Sanskrit' a difficulty rendered far greater by the varied versions ofmany translators. ln order tO overcome these difficulties a work likc the present one is really needed.
