u 記奈ーこ Study forecasts steady mic 「 0 growth despite economic slowdown The microprocessor market Will more than triple by 1983 according tO a re- search study by lnternational Data CO 「 p. Shipments will swell from last year's $ 738 million to $ 2.3 billion by year-end 1983. The primary microprocessor mar- ket—8-bit and 1 6-bit loose micropro- cessor chips (including support chips)— was worth some $ 598 million in 1979. IDC projects a growth rate 0f 36 % per year, reaching $ 2.05 billion in 1983. This estimate allows fO 「 the economic slowdown during 1980 コ n fact, IDC re- ports that the recession is already im- pacting the micro market with declining delivery times.ln 1981 , when the eco- nomic picture brightens, a sharp upturn iS predicted in microprocessor usage. The importance Of support chips is apparent when one examines the ship- ment breakdown. Micro chips had ship- ments Of $ 1 1 9 million in 1979 , while support and memory chips had ship- ments Of $ 479 million—or roughly 65 % Of the total marketlast year. By 1983 , these chips will account f0 「 77 % 0f the total market. Note, however, that the growth predicted is due mainly tO in- creased usage 0f memory chips. レ 0 chips are declining in market share as many Of their former functions are now included on processor chips. addition to the market fO 「 loose chips, microprocessor chips and associ- ated memories may a 0 be incorporated intO boards—either single board com- puters or dedicated function boards. The added value Of these boards (ex- cluding the value Of the components on the boards) was $ 140 million in 1979 , and is expected tO grow at a 23 % annualrate tO $ 316 million in 1983. Firm simply refuses 0 let the defense rest After it won the case brought against it last August by Michael Shrayer S0ftware, Vector Graphic Of Westlake Village, CA, has turned around and filed a cross complaint against Shrayer alleging libel and interference With business relation- ships, and a second suit against Shrayer and several others fO 「 trade libel. The judgement was granted tO Vec- tO 「 after the court found that Shrayer had failed tO prove its allegation that Vector had wrongfully copied the EIec- tric Pencil word processing program. performance evaluations prepared on tOP business miC 「 0 systems Within the past few years, the busi- ness microcomputer has reached プ 2 INTERFACE AGE maturity. NOt 0 可 y is there a wide variety Of computer systems available f0 「 the small business, but with available appli- cation program packages, they can be employed almost immediately. Unlike the larger minicomputers, micros are marketed through retail stores—a relatively new concept in computer merchandising. M ℃ , a data processing publication company, has issued evaluations Of the major busi- ness systems: RadiO Shack TRS-80 ー and , 旧 M 5110 and 5120 , Vector Graphic. Systems, Alpha Micro, OhiO Scientific, Rexon, North Star, C 「 0- memco, Apple and Burroughs B90. Each Of these evaluations iS an in- depth analysis 0f the computer product, its hardware, and software. ThiS set Of business evaluations iS available fO 「 $ 75 ( $ 85 outside the IJ. S. and Canada) from ManagementInforma- tion Corp. , 140 Barclay Center, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034 , ( 609 ) 428-1020. The history Of programming put 0 れ audiO and video tapes Cassettes highlighting the early tech- nical developments Of 1 3 programming languages, and the factors that in- fluenced their creation, are available from the Association Of Computing Machinery, New York City. Some Of the key personalities in the field are included: AIan PerIis and Peter Naur on AIg01, Kenneth lverson on APL, Douglas ROSS on APT, Thomas Kurtz on Basic, Jean Sammet on Cobol, JOhn Backus on Fortran, Geoffrey Gordon on GPSS, Charles Baker on JOSS, Jules Schwartz on JOVial, J0hn McCarthy on Lisp, George Radin on PL/I, Kristin Nygaard and Ole-J0han Dahl on Simula, and RaIph Griswold on Snob01. 旧 addition tO the cassette programs, 訓 excerpted from the 1978 ACM History Of Programming Language Con- ference, a 2- hou 「 program Of all the technical sessions, a program Of the opening session (introduced by Jean Sammet and keynoted by Grace HOP- per), a 2-hour program Of humorous anecdotes from the conference ban- quet with Bernard Galler as master Of ceremonies, and a special slide-show, consisting Of the 2- hou 「 audio-cassette program Of excerpts from the entire technical program and 174 slides, are a 0 available. Keyboards still dominate as communication means Keyboards will remain the ma. 」 0 「 means fO 「 people tO communicate tO machines fO 「 atleast the next 5 years, and the increasing fIOOd Of keyboard- equipped games, terminals and word processors will buoy the market for key- boards. According tO lnternational Re- source Development, shipments Of key- boards will exceed $ 100 million in 1980 , and this figure will at least double by 1985. Although the 「 epo 杙 attaches great significance" tO the rapid devel- opment Of VOice recognition equipment, the 旧 D report expects the keyboard market t0 be largely unaffected by this technology during the current decade. Membrane technology, in which the keyboard is created from severallayers Of specially-configured conducting and non- conducting sheets, is the fastest-grow- ing keyboard technology. Membrane key- boards are popular in applications where dirt 0 「 fluids are encountered, such as in process control and household appli- ances, and they can be mass-produced inexpensively. Although much 0f the fu- ture market for membrane keyboards will be in entirely new applications, such as keyboard-controlled ignition and d00 「 lOCkS fO 「 automobiles, membranes are expected tO take some market share away from Other established keyboard technologies, such as capacitive, induc- tive and Hall effect. Europe: a changing software and service market Western Europe is entering a period Of rapid change. Market forces such as the small business system and mini- computer, new DDP equipment, the wider range 0f packaged software Of- ferings, and the greater availability Of processing services iS increasing de- mand fO 「 processing services, third par- ty software, and professional advisors, according tO a research study by lnter- national Data CO 「 p. A near-$10 billion market is forecast by 1982. processing services Will remain the fastest growing sector, user spending currently growing at a 16 % per annum clip (only slightly less than the 1 7 % growth forecasted fO 「 the IJ. S. market). Spending on remote processing ser- vices will swell by some 28 % , totaling $ 3.6 billion in 1982. Batch services, ac- counting for the largest chunk Of pro- cessing service dO 臉「 s in 1978 , will only increase 4 % , tO $ 2 billion. Currently, 旧 M is the largest single supplier Of pro- cessing services in Europe With revenues 0f $ 394 million in 1978. (ln the U. S. , because of antitrust restric- tions, until 1979 旧 M could not and does not now even participate in this market. ) Most Of 旧 M's closest com- petitors are French-based companies. OCTOBER 1980
