アメリカの 境スクール。 American Environmental School : The Learning Experience at a Leading University Environmental Program 開かれた教育システムの体験 森哲郎 川 0 れな″ん

口一四万人弱の都市で、米国大西洋岸の平野とアパラチア山脈との間の高原であるピードモント地区の中心 部にある。以下、学校案内などを参考にデュ 1 ク大学の環境スクールの概要を紹介する。この環境スクール は、「環境分野の科学、政策、および管理に関する大学院レベルの教育と研究の前例のない発展」の結果と 位置づけられており、林学、環境学、および海洋科学に関する私立の専門職系大学院として誕生した。 デューク大学では、一九三二年に林学 ( 「。「 2 「もの教育が始まり、一九三八年に林学スク 1 ル (the school 。「 F 。「 2 「 y ) が設立された。その後、植林法 (silvicultu 「 e) 、病理学、生理学、生態学および生物気 象学 (biometeo 「 ology) といった分野を専攻する教授陣を加えて視点を広げた。七〇年代に入り、アメリカ 生態学に基礎を 国内で資源問題や公害問題に対する懸念が広がるなかで、教育・研究の重点を変えていく。 置いた土地利用計画を研究する天然資源生態学課程が、従来からの森林科学と森林管理の課程に加えられ、 七四年には、校名は林学環境学スクール (school of Fo 「ワ ( 「 y and Envi 「 onmental Studies) に変わった。 さらに、九一年には、デューク大学海洋研究所 (Duke University Marine Labo 「 atory) と合体して環境ス クール (SchooI of the Environment) という名称となったが、九五年にピーター日Ⅱニコラス (peter M. Nicholas) 氏の家族から受けた多額の寄付にちなんで、名称をニコラス環境スクール (Nich01as Sch001 of the Environment) とした。 「デューク大学の環境スクールの課程はほとんどがエールのものをモデルにしている。数年前に変えるま では、名前も同じだった」 ( ミシガン大学 & のプル 1 ワー・スク 1 ル長 ) という見方もあるが、名 称変更や林学重視のカリキュラムからの転換などの変革が早くから行われ、整った教育制度ができあがって いるというのが私の印象だ。 8
